Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a mental health condition characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personalities, or "alters," which take control of an individual's behavior at different times. These identities often develop in response to severe childhood trauma and can result in significant memory gaps (amnesia) when switching occurs. DID can profoundly impact daily functioning, relationships, and performance, though symptoms are manageable with psychotherapy.
Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is a mental health condition characterized by intense, unstable emotions and a distorted self-image where self-esteem is dependent on external validation rather than internal self-worth. Individuals with HPD possess an overwhelming need to be the center of attention, often utilizing dramatic, theatrical, or inappropriate behaviors to gain approval from others. This constant pursuit of notice and reinforcement serves as a primary driver for their social interactions and emotional expression.
The Person Behind The Label is a social media account that brings awareness to two under-looked mental health disorders; Dissociative Identity Disorder & Histrionic Personality Disorder.
We hope to inspire those who surround us to take steps and help those who battle with this disorder and help them recover from it. As a community, we want them to feel seen, loved and cared for.
Through our Social Media, we are hoping to help those who battle with this disorder by providing handmade comfort animals, and spreading awareness to the community. These comfort animals help reduce anxiety, mimicking human touch to release oxytocin (the "love hormone"), offering companionship, and acting as transitional objects for emotional regulation and self-soothing, bridging feelings of isolation, especially for those struggling with intense emotions or dissociation.
Psychotherapy treats Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) through a structured, trauma-informed approach that prioritizes emotional stabilization and safety before addressing underlying trauma. By utilizing specialized techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), therapists help individuals build essential coping skills and emotional regulation. The ultimate goal of this phased treatment is to process past experiences and facilitate the integration of distinct alters into a unified, cohesive sense of self.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) effectively treats Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) by replacing the compulsive need for external validation with internal self-worth. It provides a structured environment where individuals learn to identify the distorted beliefs driving their dramatic behaviors, allowing them to swap impulsive, attention-seeking actions for more stable, realistic ways of relating to others.
