Abbotsford Senior Secondary School IB Programme

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and provincial restrictions on gatherings, we are unable to host our Pre-IB and IB Information evenings for interested parents and students. In order to accommodate this evolving situation, we have produced videos outlining the Pre-IB and IB programs at Abbotsford Senior Secondary School. Anyone interested in the Pre-IB or IB programs is invited to watch the information videos and complete the applicable Online Application found under the Application Tab above. If you have any additional questions, please email the IB Coordinator, Michael Keeley, at

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme has been identified as a district academic programme that provides innovative education and world class learning opportunities to students. Highly motivated and academic secondary students in School District #34 have equal access to this internationally renowned programme. It offers a structured scholastic curriculum from grade 9 (Pre-Diploma) through to grade 12 (IB Diploma) for versatile, accomplished and intrinsically-driven learners. IB includes challenging, scholarly, and global experiences within a supportive environment that assures both breadth and depth of study. For general regulations that all IB schools must follow click here.

The International Baccalaureate Organization has prepared a “What is IB?” brochure that explains some of the rationale behind the program and some of the expectations of students in the program and what students can expect from the program.

Abbotsford Senior Secondary School IB DP Grad:

Being a part of the IB Program gave me the opportunity to challenge myself academically. It allowed me to make the most of my high school education, as well as prepared me for the harder and more independent course load of university. Many of the writing skills I developed during my time in IB were what helped me excel in my university papers. The structure of IB assignments and projects and the endless support provided by IB teachers are truly beneficial in preparing you for the quality of work that is expected in university courses. By taking IB, you receive advanced preparation for your post-secondary education, and will find that you are more adequately prepared for the transition from high school to university compared to others.

Another aspect of the IB Program that I appreciated was the support provided by peers. Everyone in the program is helping each other to succeed, and I gained a lot of experience in working creatively with others who are just as eager to challenge themselves and learn about the world. I highly recommend this program for any incoming students who enjoy learning through a fresh perspective. The IB Program will allow you to delve deeper into school subjects than you would in regular courses and will take you to a university experience where you will come prepared with an amazing set of problem-solving and creative-thinking skills.

The IB programme is recognized throughout North America as equivalent to first year university courses. Students who score well in IB subjects may receive university credit for their efforts. Due to the rigors of the IB programme, graduates tend to obtain significantly higher GPA's in the first year university.
