Grad Update!!

Dear Graduating 2022 Students and Families,

Congratulations to all of our Grads who participated in this week's very successful and enjoyable Grad Variety Show. It was absolutely wonderful to see our students performing together onstage and supporting each other backstage. Thanks also go to the many parents who coordinated the Silent Auction and support of the Variety Show – you are appreciated!

In this email, you will find attached an updated "Save the Date" poster to help you with your planning as we look ahead to our graduation recognition events. We continue to plan in accordance with all health guidelines in place, and will follow those guidelines as required.

Please note that the Grad Walk has moved to June 9th, and will occur prior to the Grad Formal. We will communicate exact details about timing after spring break. There will no longer be a Grad Walk in May. This change was made in order to align the two events to the same evening. Tickets for the Grad Formal will be available for sale soon. We are very grateful to the group of parents who are leading the organization of this event, as well as those who are supporting with other activities coming up.

We have asked all of our Grads to complete a survey indicating their interest in attending the Grad Formal event. They will have received a link to this survey in their @learn email accounts. We encourage those who haven't completed it yet to do so as soon as possible to help us plan effectively.

It is important to note that participation in Graduation events such as Grad Formal and Convocation requires individual students to be in a position to graduate. Engaging in course work, staying caught up with assignments, and communicating with teachers if encountering difficulties are all essential. We encourage students to reach out if they need help or are concerned about their progress.

Grad 2022 Variety Show and Silent Auction

Date: February 22, 2022

Time: 7:00 pm

Location: Kelowna Community Theatre

Purchase tickets here

Our Graduation 2022 activities and events are coming soon! In order to ensure great opportunities for our students, our Grad Parent Committee is actively fundraising.

There are a number of ways you can help:

1) SPONSOR part of an event - in the past OKM has had families or businesses sponsor things such as the Kelowna Community Theatre fee for the variety show, provide food or entertainment for the formal event or the garden party, or other items. The committee is finalizing the advertising opportunities that will result - ideas such as being named in the brochures, and discussions are being held with print and radio media to publicly thank sponsors.

2) DONATE items or services or gift cards for the silent auction, a large item to be raffled, or your time (in the past we have had a beer fridge full of beer, an e-bike, weekend accommodations at Big white, etc.)

3) ASK your contacts if they will donate services or gift cards (ie: a restaurant or store you regularly frequent, your hairdresser, a business owner you know)

4) PARTICIPATE - bid on items at the silent auction, buy tickets for the raffle, take your bottles to the depot under the school account, encourage your student to volunteer as needed by the student grad council, let grad parents that aren't part of the ‘OKM Grad 2022 Parent Information Page’ Facebook group know about it.

Thank you for your support of our 2022 Graduating Class!

Grad 2022 Garden Party

The traditional Garden Party will be held prior to the convocation at a private location. Finger foods, appetizers, desserts, and beverages will be offered.

As well, there will be a photographer on site to take photos, music, and a caricaturist. Dress: semi formal

Date: June 18th, 2022

Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Save the Dates!

Thursday, June 9th: Grad Walk @ the Dolphins

Our full graduating class will gather downtown at 5:30 pm for the traditional “graduation march” from the Dolphins to the entrance to the Grand Hotel. This outdoor event will take place in accordance with City of Kelowna health restrictions in place at the time. These will be communicated in advance to our students and families. After the march, students and families are encouraged to make individual plans for celebration and recognition.

Thursday, June 9th: Grad Formal @ the Laurel Packinghouse

In the spirit of a formal prom, we look forward to our graduating class celebrating together at this iconic Kelowna location. While details of this celebration are currently being finalized, we want to be sure that each graduate reserves this date in their calendar. An evening of music, appetizers, and the traditional elements we love so well - including toasts, the Grad Historian speech, and much more, will all be included. Once again, this event will be organized in accordance with health restrictions. Tickets for this event will be on sale in 2022. Our formal event is open to our graduating students only. We will require some parent volunteers to support, and will put a call out for this in early 2022.

Saturday, June 18th: Convocation @ Evangel Church

Finally, we look forward to our formal Commencement Ceremony during which each of our graduating students will cross the stage and receive their diploma. As most people know, in the last two years school commencement ceremonies have had to look different. We will again be organizing this event in accordance with restrictions, but will do our utmost to ensure that it reflects the formality and significance of this milestone for our students.

These students are an essential part of ensuring an excellent experience for all of our grads. They coordinate and organize a variety of events and activities for their peers. While we will need to think very creatively this year in particular, we are certain that they will be able to make memories together!

It is important to know that these events are not endorsed or supported by the school or District and that participation is at students’ own risk. If students participate in unsanctioned activities and return to the OKM campus, breaching District policy, they will be held accountable.
