Welcome back to school! I am eager to get to know each of you as students and people. In order for our work together to be both successful and rewarding, it is important that we have a clear understanding of each other’s expectations.
What you can expect of me:
1. I will listen and be flexible when it is appropriate.
2. I will provide extra help via email and by appointment.
3. I will provide you with prompt feedback. Quizzes, tests, and essays will be returned in a timely manner!
4. I will be consistent in enforcing both school rules and our own guidelines.
5. I am human! I MAKE MISTAKES!
What I expect of you:
1. Please come to class on time and ready to learn!
2. Be responsible and adhere to guidelines when using technology.
3. All students are required to bring all necessary materials to class each day.
4. Daily attention to the task at hand is a major requirement for success.
5. You are expected to treat every person in our class with RESPECT.
Class time:
Time in class will be used in a variety of different ways, on any given day.
Reading: A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, an independent reading unit, a fairy tales unit, dystopian fiction book clubs, and The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, along with other non-fiction and fiction texts.
Writing: You will work on your written language skills through the writing process, argumentative writing, writing realistic fiction, and through written examination of texts.
Vocabulary: We will build on our vocabulary through exploration of literary terms and new vocabulary found within what we are reading and learning.
Presentation: You will work on your oral skills through group work and whole class discussions, problem based learning, as well as, presentations of creative products.
Grading Breakdown:
Each term’s grade will be determined by the following components:
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 20%
Tests/Projects: 30%
Writing: 25%
Classwork/Participation: 15%
Homework Policy: Homework will be accepted 1 day late for 1/2 credit unless there is an extenuating circumstance.
