Things to Know:
In Skills, we will be focusing on build our math skills! We will practice our fluency using a strategy called Number Talks. The practice of Number Talks is one of the most powerful vehicles for helping students learn to reason with numbers and make mathematically convincing arguments, for building a solid foundation for algebraic reasoning, and for teaching mathematics as a sense making process. Number Talks can be best described as classroom conversations around purposefully crafted computation problems that are solved mentally. The problems in a number talk are designed to elicit specific strategies that focus on number relationships and number theory. Students are given problems and are expected to mentally solve them accurately, efficiently, and flexibly. By sharing and defending their solutions and strategies, students have the opportunity to collectively reason about numbers while building connections to key conceptual ideas in mathematics. We will start each lesson with Number Talks to help build fluency.
I will also be working closely with your child's teacher to ensure that I can provide supplemental resources for your child to better access the curriculum. We will be working through the math curriculum at a pace that your child is comfortable with. We will be working on strategies to help your child understand and apply the math curriculum.
