First grade is an exciting time to be a reader! This year we will learn many decoding strategies to help us become excellent readers.
We will also learn ways to deepen our comprehension of books. Students will show their understanding of literary and informational text by summarizing, making connections between the pictures and story, and identifying important facts and details and a variety of genres. Students’ vocabulary will expand in all subject areas through discussion of text that they listen to or read independently. Students will learn to express their understanding of text orally and in writing.
Reading is hard work! It is important for students to practice, practice, practice reading everyday. If your student gets stuck on an unfamiliar word, encourage them to decode it by using a reading strategy. Asking comprehension questions before, during, and after reading will also help your student better understand the text.
