Reassessment is practiced when students have already been assessed on outcomes from the curriculum and want to improve on the original demonstration of learning. This practice is considered part of the learning journey. Reassessments happen in the real world all the time; people can take their driver’s test, LSATs, MCATS, and other assessments over again. This process offers students the opportunity to recognize their errors and make adjustments in their learning. In this way, improvement is the focus of the learning process.
It is important to note that, "allowing students to redo both assignments and assessments for particularly important standards and outcomes most of the time is highly effective. This approach reflects what we know about successful learning, and it better prepares students for the world beyond school." (p. 2, Wormelli).
One of the district priorities is Student Success. Re-assessment contributes to student-centred learning and assessment.
ensures students learn the outcomes by strengthening areas of need
promotes a culture of self assessment and self-reflection
creates a more equitable learning environment for students
instills a growth mindset instead of fixed intelligence
aligns with the real world, where second and third chances are often available
decreases anxiety around thoughts of failure
Can my child reassess (Are there reassessment guidelines)?
Do they need to redo the entire assessment ?
When can they reassess?
How can I support my child to learn the content they did not understand before they reassess?
Encourage and guide your child to advocate for themselves by initiating a conversation about reassessment with their teacher.
Support your child through the process of reassessment. Most students will need to complete a learning plan to relearn content and demonstrate their relearning prior to the reassessment.
Help your child stay on track, and encourage them to prepare for the reassessment. Specific teachers may have resources or websites that students can use to further understand content at home.
Encourage your student to attend tutorials for extra support. Check with the teacher or consult Brightspace or Google Classroom for the teacher's tutorial schedule.
