Differentiated assessment is responsive to the diverse needs of students. This sometimes requires teachers to "do different things for different students" (Wormeli, n.d). Equity, inclusion, and diversity are at the forefront of differentiated assessment.
One of the district priorities is Student Success. Differentiated assessment contributes to student-centred learning and assessment.
Teachers begin by using tools such as diagnostic assessments and formative assessment to determine what students need. Then, they employ appropriate strategies and tools which may include technolgy to foster student success. Teachers may also ultilize district supports such as consultants and therapists to support students.
Support your child in understanding their needs and where they may require extra support or help
Encourage your child to seek extra support from the teacher when needed
Communicate with your child's teacher to be informed of progress and areas of need
Reach out to the teacher if you have questions about your child's learning
Use teacher feedback to help your child strengthen the areas they may be still developing
Remember, learning is a journey and many students need to continue to develop their knowledge and understanding over time
Celebrate success and focus on your child's strengths to encourage a growth mindset
