Increased attention to AI, including ChatGPT, has prompted the critical need to address the use of AI in K-12 education (eaton/uofc). The purpose of this FAQ is to provide information about the appropriate and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in K-12 education.
AI has the ability to enhance learning experiences, personalize instruction, and support educational outcomes. However, it is essential to ensure ethical considerations, privacy protection, and equity in its implementation for all K-12 stakeholders.
AI in education refers to the use of computer systems and algorithms designed to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. These tasks include problem-solving, understanding language, and adapting to new information. In educational settings, AI can already help personalize learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and provide insights into student performance, and this is just the beginning!
ChatGPT is a type of AI developed by OpenAI that specializes in generating human-like text. It can answer questions, provide explanations, and engage in conversation. In educational contexts, ChatGPT can assist with tutoring, homework help, and even language learning. It's important to note that ChatGPT is only one of many AI tools available to teachers. There are various other AI technologies being employed in education, each with unique capabilities to enhance learning and teaching experiences.
In CSSD , the use of AI varies depending on the discretion of the teacher, the school, the context of the learning environment, and the age of the students. Some schools may utilize AI while other schools may use AI more sparingly. This variation ensures that AI integration is suitable and beneficial for each unique classroom setting and age group. Teachers use their professional judgment to decide the best way to incorporate AI in their teaching, aligning with the educational goals and needs of their students.
No, AI is not replacing teachers. Instead, it acts as a supportive tool, enhancing the teaching process. AI can handle routine tasks and provide personalized learning insights, allowing teachers to focus more on direct student engagement and individualized instruction.
AI offers personalized learning experiences and adapts to your child's individual learning style and pace. It can also identify specific areas where your child might need extra help. Importantly, while AI brings numerous benefits, the role of the teacher remains the most crucial aspect of your child's education. Teachers act as a guide, to interpret, and supplement AI-driven insights with their expertise and personal interaction, ensuring that technology enhances rather than replaces the essential human elements of education.
“We can’t control it and we can’t ban it but we can help students learn to use it, in a supervised way, in a thoughtful way and meaningful way.”
— Sarah Eaton, Associate Professor University of Calgary, Expert in AI Education
Potential risks include privacy and confidentiality concerns, loss of creativity, lack of personalized interaction, and biases in AI algorithms. To address these, CSSD not only takes steps to mitigate risks and ensure a balanced and safe use of AI, but also actively supports digital and AI literacy through various opportunities offered to both teachers and students. These educational initiatives are designed to help everyone in the school community understand how AI works, its potential impacts, and how to use it responsibly and effectively in an educational setting.
As a parent, you can play a significant role in supporting your child's digital literacy, which includes understanding and using AI responsibly. Engage with your child by discussing the AI tools and platforms they use and encourage a critical approach to these technologies. Parents can help their children understand how AI can be used ethically and responsibly. Regularly check the AI applications for educational purposes. By staying informed and involved, you can help your child navigate the complexities of AI in a way that enriches their learning experience..
Teachers are key to successfully integrating AI into the classroom setting, if they choose to. They guide how AI tools are used, ensuring these technologies complement traditional teaching methods, address curriculum standards, and meet students' educational needs.
Students in CSSD may encounter a variety of AI-powered tools. They may also be using these tools on their own devices. Examples include: ChatGPT, QuillBot, Grammarly, PhotoMath and so many more. If you have any questions about these tools, please contact your child's school.
Many companies offer free versions of AI tools, including ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot and PhotoMath. It is important to note that many of these services require students to be at least 13 years of age and requires parental or gaurdian consent for students between the ages of 13-18.
Many AI sites warn that the AI may produce content that is not appropriate for all ages.
CSSD emphasizes the importance of academic integrity. Teachers educate students on responsible AI use and monitor their use of AI tools to prevent misuse, such as plagiarism. This is an important conversation to continue at home. Parents can support their child at home by monitoring their use of AI tools and discussing the importance of academic honesty and integrity to benefit their child’s learning. Parents can model the appropriate use of technology at home and discuss ways in which AI could be beneficial and set limits around its use.
If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your child’s school. CSSD values parental input and is committed to addressing any issues related to AI in education.
