The 2025 theme for Black History Month is: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.
IMPORTANT: Please remember that the Black History Month website is for teacher use only. It is a fantastic resource that you may use to enhance what you are already doing in your building. Prior to using assignments or resources, ensure they are appropriate for your students. As always, consult the Considerations for Selecting Text Instruction document when needed.

Long Road to Justice - The Viola Desmond Story
This dramatic monologue portrays Charles Ernest Russell, a Senior Porter who is sent a letter from the civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph, to organize a Canadian chapter of The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Performed by Derick Agyemang.
During Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.
Black History Month is a time to learn more about these Canadian stories and the many other important contributions of Black Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, and about the diversity of Black communities in Canada and their importance to the history of this country.

This site is intended to offer resources to district employees and schools bringing awareness to and celebrating Black History throughout the year and especially during Black History Month in February. Resources include school wide approaches and more specific ideas for each division. If you are beginning to introduce Black History choose the "Explore" option. Other learning opportunities encourage students to deepen their understanding through the "Engage & Inquire" options and to celebrate learning through the "Create and Share" activities.
