June 26, 2020 - Thank you parents. We have reached the end of the school year and what a year it's been. Thank you for being so flexible and understanding as we adjusted to a "new normal". I was so blessed to have such an amazing class. I loved every minute of the time I got to spend with them. I will miss these kiddos all terribly. Have a wonderful and healthy summer.
Please make sure to bookmark my Google Site and go to the Learning Links Tab so that your child has access to these fun activities over the summer.
*Please note: Your child will lose access to our Google Classrooms after this weekend.

I encourage everyone to join for the live readings if at all possible. If a student is unavailable to join at our scheduled time, they can listen to the audio recordings for the chapters covered BEFORE doing the questions. This week, I will be sending an alert out in Google Hangouts before the reading for our second book (Tuck Everlasting) begins. It is hard to judge exactly how long it will take to get through the first reading, so I will give students a little heads up. They are more than welcome to listen to both readings, but they only need to do the comprehension questions for ONE novel.

Calling on all of our Talented Students at MNA!

June 2, 2020 - In the coming weeks, because we are learning about nonfiction text, many of our L.A. assignments will overlap with Science and Social Studies. Being able to read and decode factual text is an important skill. Students will be asked to summarize text or define terms in their own words, as much as possible. Re-writing and re-wording information found in factual sources takes some practice, but is well worth it.
I have released the slideshow for tomorrow's Mayor's Expo a day early. No work is required today, but students may want to have a quick look at the times and workshops and decide what they want to do. A couple of the workshops have resources that they have provided to students or want kids to have on hand during the presentation. For the safety and security of students, Microsoft Teams will be used and the links will only be available June 3rd. Take a look at slides 13 & 14 for how signing onto these workshops using this platform.

These assignments will be reviewed, graded and will contribute to final report card marks.
April 3, 2020 - Another week is in the books. Reminder that today's spirit day theme is Everyday Superheroes. Parents are definitely deserving of this title as you have been helping students adjust to online classes. Students are invited to send me a photo of their costume. Also, I have posted a tutorial on how students will be receiving feedback from me on the Edpuzzles quizzes they have taken. Parents are invited to take a look on the stream of the Barrett5/6 main Google Classroom page for instructions.
April 2, 2020 - This Friday's spirit day theme is Everyday Superheroes. Students can dress up as Doctors, Nurses, Grocery Store Clerks, Caretakers, Paramedics etc..., all the people who are helping us through the epidemic! I will post an assignment on the Barrett 5/6 classroom (on Friday, April 3) and students can send me a photo of their costume. Have fun!
April 1, 2020 - I have created a class Google Hangout for homework help. Students can email me and request a video call if they have any questions they would like to ask face-to-face. This tool can also be used to ask for help from fellow classmates. Students have been informed that it is only to be used during regular school hours and everyone must continue to be good digital citizens.
March 31, 2020 - I have posted a weekly checklist on the Barrett 5/6 Google Classroom main page. Students are asked to use this tool to keep track of their outstanding assignments. Daily student email checks are also recommended. I will sometimes direct private comments or questions to students this way. Students are encouraged to write down any questions they have that they would like to ask me face-to-face. Keep up the great work!
March 30, 2020 - Students have been doing a fantastic job with their online classes. If students need help with any of their assignments, I am available during regular school hours (between 8am and 2:30pm). Due dates for assignments will be set for the following Sunday. Overdue work can continue to be turned in, without penalty. This is just a way for students to see what work they might have missed from the previous week.
FYI Grade 6's - PAT's are cancelled and Grade 5's - The District Religion test has also been cancelled.
March 27, 2020 - What a week! This has been a huge learning curve for all of us. Thank you so much to parents for helping your child. We couldn't have done it without you! Well done!๐๐ปPlease continue to check in with your child to make sure they are completing the required assignments for the day. Some students are still not using the Turn In or Mark As Done feature when they complete assigned work. This is how I track who is online doing their work and who isn't. There is not always something to turn in or attach, but I do need students to mark that they've completed ALL assignment. (This does not apply to optional assignments) I have supplied the class with video tutorials to help. Please let me know if they are still confused. I am happy to help.
March 26, 2020 - Thank you to all those who joined us in prayer at noon yesterday.
Students are being reminded to click on the Mark As Done or the Turn In box to let me know that they are finished an assignment. Students also need to use the comment box constructively, questions and concerns ONLY. An email is generated for me every time they type anything into this box and this tool will be disabled if students are not using it appropriately. If the wish to ask a question privately, they can send an email to my learn account: jennifer.barrett@learn.cssd.ab.ca
Just to confirm, 5 hours of work is required by students every week. I am releasing approximately 1 hr of work per day, focused on L.A., Math and Religion, with overlaps in the areas of Social Studies and Science.
March 25, 2020 - By now, most students have signed into Google Classroom to complete daily assignments. Make sure students remember to hit the MARK AS DONE or TURN IN button when they have completed an assignment. This helps me keep track of who is logging in and completing their online learning. I will post the due dates as Sunday for anything that was assigned during the week and needs to turned in, so that students have a couple extra days to work on it. I know that life right now can be crazy. I will continue to accept work past the due date, this just helps students to track what assignments are outstanding.
I will be posting answer keys for students to check some of their own work. Not everything they do will need to be marked by me. Some things will just be for their own practice. If there is an area where your child is struggling, please send me an email and I can provide additional help or practice work.
*Please join the Pope in the Calgary Catholic school community in prayer at 12:00 p.m. together today.
March 24, 2020 - I hope all families are staying healthy and close to home as much as possible. On the bright-side, what a wonderful time for some family bonding. If you have not yet picked up your child's school materials and you are healthy, please do so ASAP, during regular school hours. I will be posting daily online learning along with additional optional activities that will hopefully keep kids busy and engaged. Students should continue to do at least 20 minutes of reading daily. When students have some time, they should log onto ReadTheory (see L.A. Google Classroom for instructions) using their Google learn account and the class code is: NVZ2OS0L. After students have completed their initial profile placement, they should send me an email.
March 23, 2019 - Check the Daily Schedule tab for your child's online activities for today. Please make sure your child has signed onto ALL Google Classrooms I have invited them to through Gmail. Online student programming will commence on Monday, March 23rd. Please check the Daily Schedule tab for your child's daily online activities.
March 18, 2020 - Students can continue to check their Google Classroom pages for things to do. Today I posted a fun math riddle and a journal writing question. If you have not yet submitted a poem, feel free to do so, and there is a link on our class page to leave a video response for what you did on St. Patrick's Day. I will have more in weeks to come. Please keep up your daily reading and play some educational games, like Math Prodigy, or watch some educational programs.
March 17, 2020 - Student materials are packed-up and ready for parents to pick up in the gymnasium tomorrow at your scheduled time. For those students who keep their materials nice and neat, thank you. For those who had a messy desks, let's just say you owe me one. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
