Careers

My careers class is business and economics. My goal is to familiarize students with personal and small business finance. The projects include but are not limited to the following list:

· Balancing a checkbook: cost/benefit

· Calculating payroll: labor market

· Filing state and federal income taxes: taxation

· Conducting a survey: risk, profit, production

All of these projects involve math computations; therefore calculators are permitted. I will not be able to provide calculators, but students are allowed to bring their own to use in the classroom. Projects will take more than one class period. I do not assign homework; however, if a project does not get completed within the class time provided, students may have to finish it home.

We begin each period with a math practice that involves math in a variety of careers. The objective is for students to realize that math is not just in the classroom, but everywhere. The students have 30 minutes of class time to complete the warm-up. If a student does not finish the practice in class they will need to complete it at home.

Grades are earned as follows: projects and daily assignments are worth 100 points. Students are permitted to keep correcting both types of assignments until they earn the full potential points. I do accept work late but if assignments are missing at the time grades are reported, the grade will reflect missing assignments as zeros. I do post grades on “Q”, so your child can monitor their classwork completion. It is a good idea to check frequently to make sure all assignments are completed and turned in.

I follow the Sequoia’s guidelines when assigning work habit and citizenship grades. The guidelines are written in detail in the assignment notebook.
