Our Vision
We seek a greener, more healthful world for ourselves, our children and so on, for the seven generations to come who shall inherit the Earth. With the understanding that we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, but borrow it from our descendants, we stand on the shoulders of giants in the fields of practicing conservation, permaculture, and self-sufficiency. We use the philosophies of the Nearings, Jevons, Rodale, Howard and countless others. We follow in the footsteps of Salitan, Savory, Mollison, Sampson, Bartholomew and the hundreds and thousands of farmers, orchardists, goat enthusiasts, ranchers, poultry breeders, backyard gardeners, rooftop growers, and windowsill herbalists, to share our passion for our contributions to make the world a better, greener place where we can thrive and create our own food independence.
When all the trees have been cut down,
when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
when all the air is unsafe to breathe,
only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
— Cree Prophecy
While we began gardening at our mothers’ knees, our farm began when we bought our first acre in Lakewood Colorado. Established in 2012, we began growing a large percentage of our own food using organic and historical methods. We added chickens, ducks, bees and eventually rabbits and goats. Integration of and use of “animal power” increased our ability to feed ourselves and return nutrients to the soil. The cooperation of our animals increased our ability to help heal the earth.
What We Believe
Food forests do not need to be thousands of acres and vegetables do not need to grow in dirt, but we need to return to living in balance, rather than dominating our space. At Leap Day Farms, with a solid foundation from our predecessors and a passion to deindustrialize and decommodify our food, we help others to understand and improve the human-Earth relationship so that we are great stewarts for future generations. We are a small homestead, working on the development of sustainable food systems and wildlife sanctuary integration.
Food Independence is a move toward providing some or all of the food needed to power people and animals. Food Independence helps to insulate you and those you care about from major shifts in the world. If your food comes from your own yard, there is not interruption in the supply chain and you are more resistant to price gouging.
