Grading Policy

Grading Guidelines

Grading Policy: The grade you earn will be based on the preparation and presentation of performances as well as other tools (tests, quizzes, homework, etc.) to check understanding.

Grades are divided into these categories

  • 50% of your grade is participation—come in and try your best!!

  • 20% of your grade is minor grades (example: a worksheet, notes, etc)

  • 30% of your grade is major grades. (example: a performance, project, presentation, or a test)

Participation Grades

  • Participation grades show your level of participation in that day’s class and will make up 50% of your grade. Other participation grades can include, but are not limited to: journal and reflection writing, participating in warm ups, games, and exercises, following directions, staying on task, and productive rehearsal time.

Minor Grades

  • Minor grades, which count 20% of your total grade, will include any worksheets, or small assignments and deadlines that lead up to a test, presentation, or performance.

  • Minor grades may also include warms-ups, creative exercises, etc.

Major Grades

  • Major grades, which count 30% of your total grade, will include any performance, major project, quiz, or test.

Late Work: Work is considered late when it is presented at a time later than the due date by students who were present when the assignment was given. Work will be accepted late for two school days, immediately following the due date.

Missed Work: In Theatre, it is often hard to “Make-up” a lot of our work. In the case of missed work, if a participation grade was given, then the student will not receive a grade for that day and it will not count against him/her. If a performance is missed, he/she is to be ready to present the day he/she returns to school. If this is a group performance, and we are not able to wait for a student due to our schedule, they will be given an alternate assignment and given five days to complete it. Other circumstances will be communicated and addressed on a case by case basis. Communicate with the teacher and it will all work out!

Re-take or Re-dos: Students will have the opportunity to retake or redo any assignment excluding class performances and group projects. They have five days after the assignment has been returned to retake any assignment.

Missing a Class Performance: As performances involve many people, it is HIGHLY discouraged to miss a performance. The class schedule is communicated in advance and we need all of our performers here in order to put on a full performance with our teams. Consider each performance like a test (but a really fun test!) In the case that one must be missed, you need to turn in a note from a Parent or Guardian stating why the performance was missed and then an alternate assignment will be given. The student will have 5 school days to complete it.
