Physical Education Requirements for Middle School
Texas Law requires that middle school students must participate in a minimum of two years of physical activity. This activity may be physical education class, athletics, cheer, dance, drill team, or color guard. In LISD, students will be required to participate in a physical activity class in the 6th-7th grade.
Off Campus Physical Education (OCPE)
In accordance with local district policy, a school district may award up to four high school credits and/or three middle school credits for physical education for appropriate private or commercially-sponsored physical activity programs conducted on or off campus. In LISD, students in grades 6-12 may apply for Off Campus PE.
There are two versions of Off Campus PE:
Category 1 OCPE- Students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade wishing to leave campus on period early will apply for Category 1 OCPE
Category 2 OCPE- Students in 6th and 7th grade who wish to remain on campus and substitute their required physical education course with a different elective will apply for Category 2 OCPE. Category 2 OCPE is not needed for 8th graders since these students have already completed the required two years of Physical education in middle school.
Off-campus PE student applications for the 2026-27 school year are due June 5, 2026. No applications will be accepted after this date. The student application process, guidelines, approved agencies and additional information can be found on the OCPE website.
Off campus PE is an optional program utilized by students in grades 6-12 who wish to apply to receive their PE credit through an outside, privately funded, pre-approved organization.
