Please read below about IB internal and external Assessment. Both are required in each course for all IB Diploma Candidates.

Internal & External Assessment

Students take written examinations at the end of junior and senior year which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in school which are  initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators.

The IB diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance across the whole programme, and to satisfactory participation in the creativity, action, service requirement. The highest total that a Diploma Programme student can be awarded is 45 points.

In addition to IB Exams (developed and graded by IBO), within the IB DP teacher assessment is also used for most courses. This includes:

Internal Assessments are completed at VHS during the school year, graded by VHS IB teachers, and checked by external IB examiners. These assessments normally contribute between 20% and 30% of the total mark. In this way, students in the IB DP have more control over their final IB exam score.

Some of the arts courses, for example, music, theatre arts and visual arts, have assessment of a major practical component, which can account for as much as 50% of the total mark.
