AP Research at Vandegrift High School
AP Research, the second part of the AP Capstone program,™ allows students to explore topics they are passionate about through in-depth, independent investigation. This course builds essential college-level skills, including critical thinking, academic writing, and public speaking.
This presentation, including its content and design, is protected by intellectual property laws. Unauthorized use, reproduction, or distribution of any part of this material without explicit permission from the creator is prohibited.
Although not a College Board requirement, students at Vandegrift create a research poster after submitting their paper and completing their oral defense. These posters provide valuable experience, preparing students for similar presentations they may encounter in college and beyond.

There is no final exam for AP Research. The AP score is determined by two components: the academic paper and the oral defense.
Academic Paper (75%): The final product is an academic paper (4,000 - 5,000 words) showcasing original research or analysis.
Presentation & Oral Defense (25%): A 10-15 minute presentation of findings to a panel of evaluators, followed by 3-4 questions.
AP Research equips students with essential skills for academic and professional success by guiding them through the process of independent inquiry. Throughout the course, students will develop competencies in the following areas:

Time Management and Independence
By the end of the course, students will have completed an in-depth research project, developed critical academic skills, and gained confidence in their ability to present and defend their ideas—valuable preparation for college and future careers.
