Leander ISD has moved to Standard-Based Grading in fifth grade. Standards-based grading (SBG) is an intentional way for teachers to track their students' progress and achievements while focusing on helping students learn and reach their highest potential. Introduction to Standards-Based Grading video
What does this mean for your student? The state of Texas requires that students learn specific content each year that is academically and cognitively appropriate for that student's age. As a fifth grade team, we break down those skills into sections, then we teach the content, apply the content, and assess the content. When students complete the unit, they should demonstrate the ability to consistently apply the skill/concept independently and make connections outside of the school building.
How do teachers grade using SBG? Students will receive Beginning, Developing, or Mastery "grades".
Beginning: Consistently requires teacher support to apply skill/concept.
Developing: Demonstrates some independence to apply skill/concept but frequently relies on peer/teacher support to succeed.
Mastery: Demonstrates ability to consistently apply skill/concept independently with few errors and make connections outside of the school building.
How will I know my student's "grade"? Students will bring home their Wednesday folder every week with completed and graded work. Parents can also access their students' report cards at the end of each 9 weeks through the Home Access Center.
How do I log into Home Access Center? If you are a new family your login should be your email and your temporary password should be Riverplace1
