Each year, fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in a health lesson about the early stages of puberty. These lessons provide age-appropriate information to help students understand the physical, emotional, and social changes that can occur during this stage of development.
Lessons are taught separately for boys and girls. Participation is optional, and only students whose parent or guardian has provided permission (opted in) will participate. Students who do not participate will be supervised in a separate classroom during the lesson.
During the lesson, students will watch the grade-level instructional video listed below. Afterward, they will have the opportunity to submit anonymous questions. Presenters will answer questions that are appropriate and within the scope of the lesson. If a question falls outside the lesson content or is more personal in nature, students will be encouraged to continue the conversation with their parent or guardian.
Families are encouraged to preview the instructional videos before the lessons:
The lessons cover topics including:
Reproductive systems
Health and nutrition
Hygiene and grooming
Self-esteem
Physical changes
Emotional changes
