A family visit scheduled at time with no moon would be a great time ?to go to one of their star parties. (450 miles from Austin, but still in TX!) A few days either side of a new moon is supposed to be really good for seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye.

Duke TIP Program (must have completed 7th grade to qualify) This link shows the 7th grade sites in the US with links to more info about the camps. The people I know who have participated in the Duke TIP programs have found them amazing!! (albeit pricey)
