North Elementary is proud to have a thriving chess club with members in all grades, from Kindergarten through 5th. We currently have four groups and almost 100 players. Each group meets once every two weeks, but there is plenty of learning that can be done while students are waiting for their next club meeting. Please see the resources below to learn more.
I linked websites that I personally used for learning. However, parents and guardians should ultimately decide what tools, websites, and programs are a good fit for their children. North Elementary has not created accounts for our club on these websites.
One of the first things that we learn is the correct way to set up a chess board. Players may use the guide to the left to check their piece placement. Pay special attention to the locations of the king and queen on each side.

This website is one that I found helpful when I wanted to review the basics. Start with the "How to Play" introductory video.
ChessKid is my favorite resources for students (and parents!) learning chess. I have my own account with this program and have found it worth the price. However, many resources are available on the site even without a paid subscription. Check out the "Learn" tab for lessons and videos.
Players who are interested in participating in public tournaments should read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on this site. If you plan to attend a tournament, please let me know! I would love to come and support your player if I am available.
More advanced players may learn about recording chess games with chess notation. This video from ChessKid is a good introduction to the process.
Each player is assigned to a color group. The meeting dates for each color group are shown here. Don't know your child's color group? Email Mrs. Bartley to check!
