My first experience with teaching was in a 4th grade class at Blanton Elementary, AISD. After completing multiple observations, I led two science-based lessons with my teaching partner.
In the first lesson, we taught the kids about microscopes, then had them view live brine shrimp under the microscope. The students also learned about the life cycle of brine shrimp and how to tell male and female shrimp apart.
For the second lesson, we continued with the microscopes, but had the students explore some samples of pond water. They practiced observing the organisms in the sample, making educated inferences, and then doing basic research to identify what they saw.
My next teaching experience was in a 7th grade biology classroom at O'Henry Middle School, AISD. I observed the class for a while, then taught two unique lessons with a partner.
My first lesson was introducing genetics through exploring a model of Mendel's famous pea plant experiment. Students also learned how to use punnett squares and predicted offspring ratios when given parental information.
The second lesson was stations-based exploration of the lobes of the brain. The students learned to identify the four lobes of the brain, locate them on diagrams, list their functions, and predict what part of the brain was affected, when provided with a certain pathology description. As a final product, students made posters about specific brain lobes.
My first experince teaching high schoolers happened at Crockett Early College High School, AISD, teaching a sheltered chemistry class. As usual, I observed the class for a few days before teaching two lessons (a one-day lesson and then a seperate two-day lesson).
The one-day lesson took the form of a stations lab about the following gas laws: Boyle's, Charles', and Gay-Lussac's Laws. Students explored the relationship between temperature, volume, and pressure when dealing with gas.
The two-day lesson dealt with basic thermodynamics. On day one, students learned about the differences between temperature, enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy. They were also introduced to specific heat and the four laws of thermodynamics via a lab. On day two, students participated in a class whiteboard game activity where they worked in teams to navigate through "interstellar space" where solving thermodynamics practice problems helped them "return to Earth" safely.
Recently, I had the pleasure of teaching a small unit in a forensic science class at Navarro Early College High School, AISD. I observed the class for a while, then taught a serology unit for three days.
Serology is the study of blood, so we covered a lot of blood-related topics. Students learned about blood stain patterns, blood preservation, blood typing (including blood antigens, antibodies, alleles, and inheritance patterns), blood presumptive tests, and more.
I led the students in a blood typing lab and a blood spatter lab. On the last day, I also had the students participate in a "murder mystery" lab as their final assessment.
