Students must have an Athletic Physical on file with the athletic trainers BEFORE tryouts. Check the Leander Sports Medicine website for more details about getting a physical or contact Wayne Lauritzen who is one of our Athletic Trainers at Rouse HS (wayne.lauritzen@leanderisd.org).
Tryouts will consist of prequalification on the hitting mats at Rouse HS (August 14th, 15th & 16th: golf balls will be provided) and four nine-hole rounds of golf during the second and third week of school (players will walk each round). Players must show proficiency on the hitting mats at school during the first week of school in order to attempt qualification on the course (evaluated by Head Coach). Bring your irons to hit off the mats. Players MUST provide their own golf equipment, golf balls during the qualifying rounds.
Totals from each of your FOUR 9-hole rounds (36-hole total) will be added together for an average score. There are no exemptions. All golfers wanting to play for Rouse will be required to go through tryouts. The following are the requirements for making the team in addition to appropriate demeanor and attitude:
Boys – The top 12 boys* that meet minimum scoring criteria gain access to playing at Crystal Falls. Alternates will be granted permission to play based on availability and skill level.
Freshman and sophomores (must break 18-hole total of 110; 36-hole 220)
Juniors (must break 18-hole total of 95; 36-hole 190)
Seniors (must break 18-hole total of 85; 36-hole 170)
Girls – The top 12 girls* that meet minimum scoring criteria gain access to playing at Crystal Falls. Alternates will be granted permission to play based on availability and skill level.
Girls must break 18-hole total of 120; 36-hole 240
*The top 24 golfers will be allowed to play on Monday and Thursday at Crystal Falls GC. There might be a rotation opportunity for players outside of the top 24.
If a boy or girl finishes in the top 10 or outside the top 10 BUT does not meet the 18-hole scoring requirements (see above), they will be allowed on the team in the fall but must go through a second qualifier by the end of the fall. If they do not meet score requirements again, the golfer might be removed from the program, or the golfer’s playing privileges at Crystal Falls GC will be reduced, or their ability to play in tournaments will be strictly limited until scores improve.
Attire and Transportation:
• All players must wear a collared shirt and appropriate golf shorts to ALL practices at Crystal Falls GC. Players may choose to wear long sleeve lightweight UPF 50+ shirts and appropriate golf shorts, but all short sleeve shirts must have a collar. All collared shirts will be worn tucked in with appropriate shorts/skirts.
No jeans, athletic shorts or non-collard t-shirts (except the long sleeve lightweight UPF 50+ shirts) allowed on the course.
• A school bus will be available to deliver all golfer who need a ride to the course on Monday (playing the course), Tuesday (practice day) and Thursday (playing the course). Players MUST provide their own clubs, balls and ride home from the course each day.
• Crystal Falls is a difficult course and a player might lose many golf balls so I would buy cheap!
Golf Lessons: If you are looking for find a local golf professional for lessons you might look through this attachment which has several local golf professionals listed. I always suggest taking 1-2 lessons to get a feel of a coach before you commit to multiple lessons, but lessons do help improve your game, BUT there is no replacement for grinding on the putting green with your short game on the range from 170yards in!
Please contact me if you have any questions regarding tryouts or preparation.
Weekly Practice Schedule
Monday and Thursdays (2:30pm - 6:00pmish): The top 24 golfers will be invited to play at Crystal Falls Golf Course Monday and Thursday each week (6-foursomes).
Tuesdays (2:30pm - 4:30pm): This is our practice day at Crystal Falls GC. The following are the three stations that players who come to Crystal Falls will rotate through: Range, Short Game (by the range), and Putting Green (40mins each). Coach Hjort will be rotating through each station, but you can ask for individual help and he will come and give some guidance.
Players who have privileges at other courses MUST check in with Coach Hjort via TEXT message (512-501-9592) or in person and let Coach Hjort know if a player is driving or getting transported to another course. Parents must be advised if a player is bringing another player to a course (this will not start until September 2025).
Wednesdays (2:00pm - 3:25pm): Wednesdays will be used as hitting days at Rouse HS. We have 10 mats located outside on the grass fields and we will be working on different clubs each week. PLAYERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL CLUBS to hit at Rouse. Yes, we have extra clubs, but hitting your clubs is where you get to work on distance and accuracy. Notice, if parents would like to pick up their golfers by the mats around 3:25pm players need to let Coach Hjort know who is picking them up.
