Bluebonnet Books

What are they?

The Texas Bluebonnet Award is one of the most prestigious children’s choice literary awards in the United States. Each year, 20 books are chosen for the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Schools and libraries around the state participate in the program, encouraging students to read a minimum of five books from the list. In January, students vote for their favorite title. The author of the book receiving the most votes wins the Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) which is presented at the Texas Bluebonnet Award presentation held during the TLA Annual Conference in the spring.

Where are the books?

We have four copies of each of the twenty Bluebonnet books in the Larkspur library. Additionally, there are copies available on SORA, LeanderISD's digital library - accessible through Classlink.

What are the rewards?

If you read five by January, you will be able to vote for your favorite Texas Bluebonnet book. All votes across the state of Texas will be tallied together and the winner will be announced at the annual Texas Library Association Conference in April, 2024.

If you read ten by the end of February, you will be invited to a Bluebonnet Party in March where we will have snacks and play trivia connected to the Bluebonnet books. Forms to be signed by parents to document which books each of the students have read will be coming in the spring once more students have the opportunity to read 10 books.

The top four students that have read the most books, and are able to answer trivia questions about the books will be invited to represent Larkspur Elementary at the virtual Battle of the Bluebonnets (More information about this coming at a later date).

Is this required?

No, this is an optional reading challenge. Students are not required to participate in the reading challenge - it is for the love of reading and for fun! The Bluebonnet list has a wide variety of genres and allows for students to reaffirm their love of a genre of texts while discovering new genres.
