Grading Policy

Cycle grades are weighted accordingly:

90% Assessments

10% Homework/Daily Work

Retakes

Assessments:  Each grading period students can expect to take 3 - 4 assessments.  Students have the opportunity to retake any of the assessments by the end of the six weeks for full credit.  If a student retakes an assessment, they will receive the higher of the two grades (the original assessment and the retake are NOT averaged).  The average of all assessments will count as 90% of the cycle average.

Homework and Daily Work:  Each assignment will be given an original due date.  If a student is not satisfied with their grade or did not complete the assignment then he/she will have until the end of the grading cycle to redo/turn it in for full credit.  Homework provides students with the practice needed to master the skills.  Completing homework and daily work is essential for success on the assessments.

Please note that a failing score on an assignment given toward the end of the six weeks may affect UIL eligibility, even if the grade can be changed after official grades are due.  Please notify your teacher BEFORE an assessment if you are struggling with any subject matter, so that your teacher can provide you with the help you need.

Absences

All work missed due to an excused absence must be made up and shall be accepted without any penalty in accordance with HMS policy.  UIL based extra-curricular activities, such as athletics, band, dance, choir, cheer, etc., are NOT excused absences.  Any assignments missed are due on the day the student returns to school.  Our coaches and directors encourage our students to request any work, including assessments that will be missed due to games or concerts ahead of time and we are always happy to oblige - just ask!
