High school students may take correspondence, distance, or virtual courses outside of the school day at their own expense. Credit toward state graduation requirements will be granted only when the requirements outlined below are met.
Student Eligibility
Middle school students may not earn correspondence course credits.
For purposes of correspondence coursework, students are considered high school students beginning the summer immediately following 8th grade and prior to entering 9th grade.
Beginning with the Class of 2031, high school students may earn a maximum of four credits through correspondence courses during their high school career.
Approved Course Providers
To receive credit toward state graduation requirements:
The course must be offered through UT High School, Texas Tech University High School, or the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN).
The course must be approved before the student enrolls by submitting the Coursework Approval Form.
Course credits completed without prior approval will not be accepted or added to the student's transcript.
Approval Process
For students taking a course in order to advance to the next course in sequence:
Submit the Coursework Approval Form by 4:00 p.m. on March 11, in alignment with the course request change deadline.
Complete the approved course by July 25.
Ensure the course credit is submitted and posted to the student's transcript by August 1 in order to advance to the next course in sequence.
For students taking a course only to meet graduation requirements:
The provider's official transcript must be submitted at least 30 days before graduation for the student to participate in graduation ceremonies.
Approval Considerations
Coursework approval decisions will consider:
Successful completion of all prerequisite courses.
The student's eligibility under district correspondence course guidelines.
The impact of the request on campus scheduling, staffing, and instructional capacity.
For students in the Class of 2031 and beyond, whether the requested course would exceed the four-credit correspondence course limit.
Additional Guidelines for Students and Families
GPA & Class Rank: Grades from TxVSN and Proximity Learning courses are included in GPA and class rank calculations. Grades from other correspondence, distance, or virtual courses are not included.
NCAA Eligibility: Student-athletes are responsible for confirming whether a course meets NCAA core-course requirements. Students and families should consult the NCAA Eligibility Center before enrolling.
Course Completion: A course is not considered complete until the final grade has been submitted by the provider and officially recorded on the student's transcript by the campus registrar.
