My personal story begins back in Southern California where I lived for about 35 years.
As a teenager, I had dreams of going to UCLA law school and so, I focused my energy on academics, the high school swim team, student government and school clubs. During my last year in high school, I also started dating my future wife.
While attending the University of California, Irvine, I pursued and earned my B.A. in Political Science. I also worked for an attorney service to pay for tuition costs and eventually found out that the world of law was not the right "fit" for me.
Luckily, my cousin-in-law’s wife, who was a teacher at the time, suggested that I consider a career in education since she felt that I naturally worked well with young people. One year later, I found myself teaching in a challenging inner-city school in one of the poorest areas of Orange County and California. Naturally, I fell in love with the world of teaching and those students. I also learned that, despite their daily obstacles, they were still kids with their own dreams.
Ten years later, my wife and I decided to make a “life change” for our family and so considered moving to the Austin area. We both love that we made the correct choice!
For the last nineteen years in the Austin area, I have been fortunate to work at Canyon Ridge, Four Points and Vandegrift High School. Between these two middle schools, I took the personal and professional challenge and opportunity to work for a University of Texas, University Charter School/Residential Treatment Center for a year.
Twenty-nine plus years of teaching have granted me the experience of teaching ELL students, SPED, inner city students, socially/economically challenged students, Social Studies 6th to 12th grade, Language Arts courses, Saturday Math Academy programs, Academic Pentathlon competition teams, emotionally and neurological challenged students, FTC robotics teams, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students 9th to 12th grade and AP Human Geography.
As an educator, I believe that the classroom environment prepares students for real life situations. Hard work, thinking at high levels, having standards and reachable goals, belief in oneself, and enjoying life are important things that I model for my students.
Lastly, I am a passionate advocate for "student responsibility". I want my students to be FUTURE READY!
Student responsibility encompasses the following below:
completing homework on time with quality
being prepared for class
contributing to the class
asking lots of good questions
advocating for oneself
coming in for support/tutorials
pushing oneself to be better
checking grades online regularly
taking advantage of teacher tutorial times and PIT
marking things and checking things off in your agenda (especially if you forgot to turn in an assignment)
signing up for Remind (checking it regularly)
Some of the ways that you can support your son/daughter are suggested below:
check my teacher website
have conversations about what we are doing/studying in class with your son/daughter
look over your son’s/daughter’s homework
check online for grade updates
have a conversation with your son/daughter about and grades/issues prior to emailing or calling me
coach your child on the importance of marking things in his/her agenda (especially if he/she forgot to turn in an assignment)
I truly believe that this will be a successful year for your son/daughter! If you have any questions, comments and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Adrian
