Coco Mendoza has been a part of the East Oakland community for 15 years. He has been the AP Spanish teacher for 12 years and now teaches Spanish 4 and Spanish I . He is an Academic Coach and the head of the World Language Department. He uses art in his classes as a way to teach and learn playfully, acknowledge his students' cultural backgrounds, and as a way to encourage and bring out his students' creativity and their capacity to think outside the box. He has been practicing Mindfulness with students and teachers for all these years. He believes that encouraging teachers and students to "check in" with themselves has a tremendous positive impact in the classroom and in their lives. He is a buddhist practitioner with passion for all kinds of justice.
