English Language Arts (ELA)
Reading Text: Journeys (Textbook and Readers Notebook can be accessed online through Think Central.)
Core Literature: Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt, Bud not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
Reading Requirements: In addition to the reading text and core literature, every
student will be required to complete independent reading.
Accelerated Reader: (AR book finder site allows students to search book of interest to find the reading level and points for quiz.)
1st Trimester- 2 books
2ndTrimester- 3 books
3rd Trimester- 3 books
*Students are encouraged to choose books from a variety of genres, such as Historical Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Mystery. Students should complete the required amount of reading at their individual reading level as determined by the STAR test. The corresponding AR test must be taken and passed at 70% or higher. If a vocabulary test is available, students must also take the vocabulary test. The average score for all tests will be used as part of the student's reading grade for the trimester.
Writing: Students will be writing five-paragraph essays using the Writing Process. Our 5th Grade focus is on narrative, persuasive/opinion and informational. (Other writing includes: Literature Response Journals, summary writing across the curriculum, and poetry.)
