Battle of the Books 2025-2026
Battle of the Books 2025-2026
Battle of the Books is an optional, engaging literary competition designed to foster a love for reading among LCUSD's 7th and 8th grade students. Each month, students have the option to read 1-4 books on a variety of topics and in a variety of formats. We participate in book club style conversations, play book-based games, and make book-based art projects once a week during Homeroom. There is also an optional, fun literary competition that students may choose to join in the spring. Please note that this Homeroom is for all readers, regardless of ability level, and that students can still participate even if they only choose to read one book per month. We do ask students of a commitment of reading at least one book per quarter to stay in the Homeroom.

We meet during Homeroom in Room 731. We do our Battle of the Bookks activities on Wendesdays.
Can I do other activities during Homeroom if I am in Battle of the Books?
You can still do intramural sports on Thursdays. If you are committed to ASB or Builder's Club, then you need to be in that Homeroom both days, and you can check out Battle of the Books another year.
Also, because we only meet one of the two Homeroom days, you still have one day to do homework, meet with teachers, etc. And if you need to be out occasionally on our meeting days, that is fine. Remember that the goal is to read as much as we can given the other constraints of our lives, and to have fun!
Do I have to read all the books?
No! You can read all the selections each month, but that is not the expectation. The hope is that you will find one book a month you enjoy reading. The minimum committment to compete is one book per quarter.
What if I am a slow reader?
Battle of the Books is for ALL readers. You set your own pace, and you read what looks good to you. The goal is for everyone to ENJOY reading. Speed reading is NOT encouraged. There is no penalty for not finishing a book or not reading "enough" in a given time frame. We are here to cheer everyone on in their reading!
What if I don't finish a book?
That's fine. Life is too short to read things you don' t like.
What if I can't do the competition in the spring?
That's also fine. We realize that you guys have a lot of competing activties. The competition is FUN (and you get free books, pizza, and treats), but it's not mandatory!
What does a typical meeting involve?
Usually, we try to check in with other people who are reading the same book we chose. Sometimes there are discussion prompts. Sometimes there are mini team competitions with prizes. Sometimes there are crafts. Sometimes there are treats. Always, there is fun to be had.
