Boston University Summer Journalism Academy
If you are interested in a career in journalism, writing, communications, or photography, apply for the Boston University Summer Journalism Academy, hosted by Boston University College of Communication.
For 14 years, our program has trained high schoolers critical skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing. Our courses are taught by award-winning, working journalists, including Pulitzer Prize winners Lara Salahi and Rochelle Sharpe . Students interested in visual storytelling will learn from veteran photojournalist and The Boston Globe photographer Stephen Haines. Regardless of which program students choose, we challenge them to step outside their comfort zone and experience life as a working journalist.
We offer three courses:
An on-campus residential program from June 24 to July 12, 2024 (for students with some journalism experience)
An on-campus photojournalism program from June 24 to July 12, 2024 (for students interested in visual storytelling)
A two-week learn-from-home program for high school students at all experience levels, starting June 17, July 1, and July 15.
Applications for the on-campus session are due on April 19. Applications for learn-at-home sessions starting June 17, July 1, and July 15 are due on May 10. Students who apply, are accepted, and fully registered by March 8 can save $400 off the full fee for the on-campus academy or $200 off the full fee of the learn-from-home academy. We have limited need-based scholarships and financial aid available to students; students must email us for more information.

Philosophy and Critical Thinking (PACT) Summer Camp
About the Camp
The Ohio State Philosophy and Critical Thinking (PACT) Summer Camp is a perfect introduction to the exciting world of philosophical thought. This weeklong summer learning program for high school students is organized and led by the Department of Philosophy at The Ohio State University. It's designed to introduce students to philosophy through learning experiences that are rigorous, engaging, and fun. Over the course of our time together, campers will form a community of inquiry where they can reflect on the issues they care about most, practice critical thinking skills, share some laughs, and (along the way) tackle some of the biggest questions in philosophy today. For the 2024 PACT Summer Camp, we are offering 2 week-long in-person sessions on different themes.
2024 Session 1 Theme: Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence
Dates and Times: June 10-14, 2024 from 9:00am to 4:00pm, plus additional after-camp programming until 6:30pm.
Questions we will explore through guest lectures from our world-class faculty, interactive discussions, media, and debates:
Can a computer system be “intelligent” or “conscious”?
How and why can “artificial intelligence” improve on human decision-making?
How and why can the use of algorithms or machine learning improve the fairness of decision-making? How and why can it enshrine bias or other forms of injustice?
Who is responsible when a self-driving car or a social media algorithm produces bad outcomes?
Does the potential for super-intelligent autonomous AI systems pose an existential threat to humanity?
These are just some of the questions we'll discuss in our time together at PACT Session 1! See you there.
2024 Session 2 Theme: Science, Faith and Reality
Dates and Times: June 24-28, 2024 from 9:00am to 4:00pm, plus additional after-camp programming until 6:30pm.
Questions we will explore through guest lectures from our world-class faculty, interactive discussions, media, and debates:
What is the nature of science?
Are there important questions science can't answer?
Is science aimed at truth or just at helping us to make useful predictions?
Does God exist? Is belief in God a matter of reason or of faith?
Can faith ever be rational?
What is skepticism? Can it ever be rational?
Do we have evidence that we live in a simulation or a multiverse? How do these ideas relate to questions about God?
These are just some of the questions we'll discuss in our time together at PACT Session 2! See you there.
Most past participants have said that the camp made them less nervous or more excited about their college experience. Others reported the camp making them consider philosophy as a major, or attending Ohio State University.
Additionally, participants have reported developing a diverse set of skills. Those most often reported were the ability to evaluate an issue from multiple perspectives, the ability to critically think, improved debate skills, and an understanding of the mechanics of an argument. Additionally, participants indicated they gained the ability to better articulate their ideas, confidence in developing and defending their own views, and greater tolerance for varied/opposing viewpoints.
