Program Overview
The Introduction to Horticulture course is designed to be an introduction to the Horticulture pathway. It is recommended as a prerequisite for all other horticulture courses. This course includes organized subject matter and practical experiences related to the culture of plants used principally for ornamental or aesthetic purposes.
Instruction emphasizes knowledge and understanding of the importance of establishing, maintaining, and managing ornamental horticulture enterprises. Typical instructional activities include hands-on experiences with propagating, growing, establishing, and maintaining nursery plants and greenhouse crops; tissue culture techniques; designing landscapes; preparing designs; sales analysis and management; participating in personal and community leadership development activities; planning and implementing a relevant school-to-work transition experience; and participating in FFA activities.
About the Teacher
My name is Tyler Outen. I am a graduate of Lancaster High School and I am excited to be teaching agriculture and horticulture here at LCSD Career Center. The horticulture pathway offers more than just a class at school. The class offers limitless opportunities for hands-on learning, leadership development and personal growth.
After graduating from LHS, I studied at Clemson University. A lifelong passion for watching things grow developed working on the farm with my uncle and helping tend my grandmother's garden at a young age. I enjoy helping young people realize the importance of understanding how food is produced and how agriculture impacts every aspect of life. I am certain that anyone who takes an agriculture class at LCSDCC will gain a level of appreciation in what it takes to feed, clothe, shelter, and make the world beautiful.
