About Me
Hello my name is Shawanda George-Miller. I am a 1995 graduate of Lancaster High School. I attended North Greenville University and received a scholarship to play three sports (Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball). In 1999 I graduated from NGU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In 2002 I began my teaching career at South Middle School as a Computer Keyboarding teacher. I then went through an alternative route called PACE to obtain my professional teaching certificate, for which I am a certified Business and Marketing Education teacher. In 2010 I received a Master of Education in Divergent Learner from Columbia College. In 2018 I completed the requirements to obtain my Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certificate in which I taught Intro to Careers for several years. In the fall of 2019 I was inducted in the Hall of Fame at North Greenville University for Volleyball and Softball. I am currently teaching Fundamentals of Computing at the Lancaster County School District Career Center (LCSDCC) grades 9-12. I’m married to Chris Miller who teaches Physical Education and Driver’s Education at Lancaster High School.
We enjoy vacationing and spending time with family and friends.

Course Description:
Fundamentals of Computing is designed to introduce students to the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. Through creativity and innovation, students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills to implement projects that are relevant to students’ lives. They will create a variety of computing artifacts while collaborating in teams. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of the history and operation of computers, programming, and web design. Students will also be introduced to computing careers and will examine societal and ethical issues of computing.
Textbook: Discovering Computers 2018 Digital Technology, Data and Devices By: Misty E. Vermaat/ Sebok/ Freund/ Campbell/ Frydenberg
Software: SAM, Student Assessment Manager.
This program contains the e-book along with activities. Students observe, practice and train, then apply their skills live in the application.

SCDE Standards: Fundamentals of Computing
Classroom Expectations
Be a positive and contributing part of the classroom learning community:
1. Respect the rights of others to learn in a positive learning environment in class and virtual.
2. Strive to act responsibly at all times.
3. Think before you speak or share your opinion.
4. Wait for your turn to speak.
5. Complete assignments as directed.
6. In class no food and/or drink in the classroom in order to protect the school equipment.
7. Do not use your cell phone during class.

4. Major infractions of LCSD rules will result in immediate disciplinary action.
Class Work and Grading
Weight of 1 each:
Class work: Class work includes whole group, small group, and independent work assignments.
Discussion Board: Each student will complete a discussion question each school day. Each question will count for 20 points of a weekly 100 point grade. Daily answers must include a response of at least 50 words which are both relevant and appropriate.
Weight of 2 each:
Quiz: Short checks for understanding.
Weight of 3 each:
Assigned group and independent projects: (rubrics will be utilized) Tests
Class Procedures and Information:
1. Students in class enter quietly and begin entry work at your assigned seat
2. Entry work will be Discussion Board prompts for both in class and virtual students.
3. Whole group and/or small group instruction time will begin 10 minutes after the tardy bell to allow time for entry work to be completed.
4. Independent Work will follow group instructions.
5. Bathroom time is permitted after instruction has taken place.
6. Book bags should be placed out of walking areas.
Course Policies:
Missed Classes: The student is responsible for obtaining material distributed on class days when he/she
was absent.
Assignments: All assignments are due on the given due date before the end of class. Late submission of assignments will be assessed a penalty of 10% per day. No exceptions are made. Missed assignments are those assignments which were given in the classroom while you were absent. You are given up to one week from the time you return to school, to complete the missed work.
Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on exam, paper or project; and/or failure in the course.
Need for Assistance: If you have any condition, such as a physical or learning disability, which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined it, or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me as soon as possible. Posting of Grades: Grades are available through PowerSchool. Incomplete Policy: Student work will be graded based on the submission of the assignment. If no submission is made, a grade of 0 will be entered.
Academic Help: I am available by appointment for before-school, after-school and on Monday’s for assistance. However, please make note that I am not available for extra time to complete work you failed to work diligently and attentively on during your given class time.
