Textbook: Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured 12th Edition
Course Description: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-EMS 3) serves as an entry level course in professional health careers. EMT is a solid foundation for further study in prehospital care (intermediate and paramedic) nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and premedical studies. EMT/EMS 3 provides the student with the knowledge and skills for the emergency medical field, responsibilities, first aid measures, and use of emergency equipment. The course is offered as a dual-enrollment course (EMS 110) with York Technical College, and is offered on a high school campus with a DHEC (Department of Health and Environmental Control) approved EMT instructor. After the student’s 18th birthday and successful completion of both the practicum and the theoretical National Registry examination for EMT, the student will be nationally registered, and state certified in South Carolina. National registry card expires in two years and state certification expires every four years.
Prerequisite(s): Completion of Emergency Medical Services 2 course with a grade of B or better and Anatomy and Physiology (or recommendation of EMS coordinator or instructor) Student must also meet admission requirements of the participating local technical college, if student is dual enrolled.
Prerequisite(s): EMS 1 and 2
Credit: CP - 1 unit = (120 hours)
Concentrator: Completes EMS 1 and EMS 2.
Completers: Three Course: EMS 1, EMS 2, EMS 3
Instructional Philosophy: I have high expectations for my program to get students ready for employment in the Emergency Medical Services field, including soft skills and employability grading on top of skills and knowledge assessments. We will lead the semester with knowledge and testing on the preparatory module of the Emergency Medical Technician curriculum. Assessments will include electronic testing, lab grading, employability grading, and practical examinations. YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL CLASS ACTIVITIES AND/OR SKILLS LABS ACTIVITIES. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL REFLECT NEGATIVELY ON YOUR GRADE.
GRADE SCALE:
A: 100-90
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: <60
NOTE: An 80% in this class is required to be eligible to qualify to sit for the National Registry EMT certification exam.
Missing assignments will go into D2L as zeros until they are completed. They will be graded as follows: for every day they are late, 10 points will be deducted from the grade. Once the assignment is five or more days late, it will be entered as a zero.
Initial EMT Training Program Completion Requirements
1. Complete all homework / quizzes / assignments, module exams, and the comprehensive final with an overall grade of 80% or higher.
2. Navigate activities will be averaged to be 20% of the overall grade.
• Chapter and/or unit quizzes are taken online and must be completed within the dates/times allotted. Each quiz
may be taken up to three (3) times.
All attempts of a single quiz will be averaged to record the grade for that quiz.
3. Module exams will be averaged to be 30% of the overall grade.
• Students are required to pass each of the eight (8) module exams with a score of 75%
• Students are allowed up to three (3) exam retakes:
» A Student may fail a module exam and will be allowed to retake that module exam one time after receiving remediation through tutoring on the topic.
» Tutoring will be scheduled with the course instructor OR the program director by appointment PRIOR to taking the proctored retake.
» The retake exam will consist of the same CONTENT as the initial exam; however, it WILL NOT be identical to the initial exam.
» If a student fails the retake exam, he/she will be not allowed to sit for the National Registry Exam..
» A student may fail up to 2 additional module exams and will be allowed to retake an exam following the aforementioned procedure.
» If a student fails a 4th module exam, he/she will not be allowed to sit for the National Registry Exam.
4. Class participation and skills will be averaged to be 20% of the overall grade.
• Students are expected to attend and participate in all skills sessions
• The EMT Program is considered a workforce training experience; therefore, students are expected to attend class the same way they would be expected to report to work. Consistent and punctual attendance is expected. In the event a student may be late, need to leave early, or be unable to attend a scheduled class
session, that student is expected to provide prior written notice to the instructor and program director via email. Absences without prior notice are not tolerated in the workplace and will not be tolerated here.
• DHEC allows a MAXIMUM of 10% of the course to be missed with the instructor approval. Any absences that exceed 10% of the in-person sessions must receive approval from the program director. Extenuating circumstances will only be considered for approval. Each circumstance will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
These include, but are not limited to:
» Military Orders
» Death of a loved one
» Birth
» Accidents / Illnesses
» Jury duty / court appearance
• Any absence in excess of 20% of the in-person sessions cannot be approved, per DHEC, and the student will be dismissed from the course
• Attendance at the in-class CPR certification course is mandatory and cannot be excused. This is factored into the participation / skills grade.
• Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 hours of ambulance ride time with a 911-based system approved by York Technical College
» DHEC requires that each student complete 10 patient contacts / assessments during their field experience » If a student should not meet this requirement within the 24 hours of field experience, they must schedule additional ride time with an approved agency to meet the requirement.
• Skills exams will be completed throughout the course to ensure students are prepared for the South Carolina psychomotor exam.
Each student must successfully demonstrate competency in each of the following skills:
» Patient Assessment - Medical
» Patient Assessment - Trauma
» Oxygen Administration by Non-Rebreather Mask
» Bag Valve Mask of Apneic Patient
» Joint Immobilization
» Long-Bone Immobilization
» Bleeding Control and Shock Management
» Cardiac Arrest Management / AED
• Platinum Planner Adaptive Quizzes must be completed during the course and will be 10% of the overall grade
• The comprehensive final exam will be 20% of the overall grade
» Students must successfully pass the comprehensive final exam with a minimum cut score of 80%
» No retakes of the final exam will be allowed
Distance Learning (sickness, inclement weather, etc.): All classes are subject to distance learning elements, with materials being provided to enable this. Please pay close attention to the support platforms like Google Classroom for most of the materials. Regular assignments will be given on the formats and will have deadlines. Please check in every school day you are not in school to complete these. These will be graded and must be completed, as they will be entered into Powerschool. Discussing missing assignments is YOUR responsibility to make sure that all assignments are completed.
Basic Procedures/Behavior Plan: Enter the classroom calmly and ON TIME. Use the restroom if needed before class starts. PUT CELL PHONES AWAY, ON SILENT, sit down and be ready for class to begin at the bell.
Cellphone usage is restricted according to district policy.
Cell Phone Policy:
Students enter class and complete a bell ringer assignment while I take care of housekeeping (attendance, tardies, etc).
After housekeeping, we will do a cell phone roll call. Students will place phones in a designated area for the duration of instruction and activities.
Once that time has expired, students can collect their phones by roll call.
Students that placed a phone in the designated area can check messages and listen to music during independent activities.
At no time should a student be scrolling through their phones or watching videos on their phones. This would be a violation of the cell phone policy.
Students that did not place a phone in the designated area cannot have a phone out.
Students who break any of the policy rules are given a warning the first time and sent to the office on the second violation.
Keeping the door locked is everyone’s responsibility. Only the teacher can open the door and it must never be propped open.
Students will comply with the Lancaster County District rules and policies.
Students will be respectful to one another, faculty, and administration. This is preparation for real world employment, where this is non-negotiable.
Employability grades will be awarded each grading period in class and labs. The students’ willingness, work ethic and attitude will play a large factor in this grade.
Supplies: pens or pencils
Chromebook
Spiral notebook for taking notes
Students are expected to bring a charged chromebook to class every school day. Non-operating chromebooks and inappropriate use in class (watching videos, etc.) are both contrary to employability. Lids should be down when not being used. Damaged and non-operational chromebooks must be reported immediately and repaired to succeed in this class.
Homework and Missed Work Policy: Homework will be given each week, and is generally in your Google Classroom and is due according to the dates shown.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to seek the makeup work from the instructor the day you return from an absence. It is also your responsibility to take any missed quizzes. Generally the academic work will be in D2L or Google Classroom and it is advised to get this completed during your absence, if you are physically able, to lessen any stress when you return.
Absence recovery will be assessed according to the Career Center, LCSD, and DHEC policies and must be submitted by the due date. Students not completing required recovery will fail the course.
Hygiene and Jewelry:
Do maintain personal cleanliness and wear mild scented deodorant.
Do keep hair washed and tied up if long.
Do cover any cuts, scrapes, sores, etc.
DO report diarrhea, vomiting, jaundice, or sore throat with fever.
DON’T wear perfume or cologne.
DON’T have any artificial nails, nail polish or natural nails longer than ¼ inch beyond your fingertip.
DON’T wear stud earrings larger than the size of a pencil eraser. Hoops are not acceptable in the clinical setting.
DON’T wear any wrist jewelry to include bangles. Watches are acceptable.
Food and/or drinks are not permitted in the skills lab.
Talking: No talking without permission during teaching or demonstration times, please raise your hand if you have a question. This also applies to tests or quizzes, unless otherwise instructed.
Being loud: Communication is key but if one is being excessively loud, no one else can function and dangerous conditions can develop.
Sleeping or Head Down: Please participate in class. The instructor should be able to see your open eyes. This will have an effect on your employability grade.
Profanity: Be respectful of your classmates. This will have an effect on your employability grade.
Headphones/earbuds: Leave these in your backpack during class. There may be times that the instructor will allow you to use them.
Not participating/non compliance: Contribute to the value of the class. Ask relevant questions. Answer questions asked. Follow directions.
Exit Tickets and Bellringers: Some classes will feature a bellringer on the screen when you enter the classroom. Complete in your notebook or chromebook as instructed. You will provide “EXIT TICKETS” for some activities, labs, and class days. On your way out of the door or first thing the next day , you will turn in an assessment of the day.
I HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE RULES AND EXPECTATIONS OF THIS EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES CLASS. I WILL CONDUCT MYSELF IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER AT ALL TIMES AND STRIVE TO GO
ABOVE AND BEYOND.
Additionally, I understand and agree that photos and video taken during class and lab periods may be used as examples of work in the classroom, on social media, website and outside of the classroom. Finally, there will be times when clinical assignments will be made in order for the student to have a full understanding of EMS and day-to-day operations. This will be done outside of school hours, and transportation will be the responsibility of the student and/or family.
