DIY Garden Tips and Tricks
- Remember that the ideas in the document are just that ideas. We encourage you to experiment with things you have around the house to see what you can grow
- When choosing vegetables to start with, choose those that already have some new growth or roots on them (when applicable). This is fairly common at the store.
- When starting roots in water, change the water every day or every other day.
- Look up ideal growing conditions for the plants you are working on. For example, some plants like lots of sunlight, while some prefer some shade. Figuring out how your plant grows best will give you the best harvest
- Some plants in the suggested document can be grown year-round indoors. You just have to remember to water and care for them.
- Did you know that talking to your plants helps them grow? Try it out- talk to your plant while you water them! They sure love company.
- When growing from kitchen scraps, the key is to plant as soon as possible. So, put your potential plant in water or soil as soon as you can. This gives it the best chance to grow and thrive.
- Don’t forget to water the plants and when it is warm outside, try and put the plants out to grow.
- A great addition to soil is compost and you can easily make your own compost to use- again, using kitchen scraps. It is easy to do (could be smelly, so do this in the garage or in the yard) and provides a nutrient rich addition to your soil.
Bring back the Butterfly -
Butterflies (and bees) are the pollinator tools for all veggie gardens; their visits will augment fruit production. This kit contains organic perennial wintered seeds from monarda, catmint, and echinacea. Be an earth angel, and make a home for these important creatures and watch the butterfly bless your garden.
On top of providing these seeds, volunteers will show where we can find flowers in our own region, how we can pick and transplant into a designated butterfly section of your plot.
Recommend on committing a 3’ x 3’ garden plot - in soil as all plants can winter, and come back year after year. However, committing garden plot to pots or less space is fine.
Grow your own radishes in containers!
The garden club will provide the seeds - students will need some soil and a 6” container.
Plant each radish seed 1/2 inch deep and spaced one inch apart.
Keep the seeds and soil moist without being soggy and seeds should sprout within 5-10 days!
Within 20-25 days your radishes will be ready to eat. Check the size to determine if it’s “pickable” gently brush the dirt off around the base of the leaves to judge if it’s eating ready!
