The ROBO Warriors & The Warbots

We began our very first Robotics Club last year after learning that study after study shows a correlation between academic success and participation in extracurricular activities, as well as fewer behavioral problems outside of school. And the opportunity to learn valuable early engineering skills at a young age can give students who otherwise might not consider STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers the interest and confidence they need to pursue one.

We are proud to give our students the opportunity to develop problem solving and creativity skills, learn about issues facing the world around them, and build meaningful relationships with their peers. Our Robotics team is currently made up of twenty 5th and 6th graders. The students go through an application process to secure a spot on the team. Club meetings are held monthly after school and as needed during the school day to prepare for competitions. They all learn so much and even teach their sponsors a thing or two along the way.

Last year 5 students from our team competed in the Wonder League Robotics Competition which brings teams from around the world together to overcome obstacles and solve coding challenges while having a blast.

This year we partnered with First Lego League and took two teams to East Limestone to compete. After months of planning and preparation they learned a great deal about the Human Water Cycle and the EV3 robot. The team represented our school very well and we are looking forward to competing again next year.

Here are a few devices our team has been exposed to thus far;

SPRK+ is far more than just a robot - it’s a vehicle to discovery. Students connect to the Lightning Lab app to learn programming, complete activities, and get inspired through connected play and coding. This app-enabled ball is just the start.

The LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 curriculum pack is built on Next Generation Science Standards and delivers key science content.

Wonder makes robotics as delightful as finger painting. A picture-based coding language built for kids, children create detailed behaviors for Dash, creating the robot pet, pal or sidekick of their dreams.
