Day 2: Secondary Sessions
Day 2: Secondary Sessions
Breakout Session 3
9:30 - 10:30 am
Presenter
Mollie Hackett
Grade Band: 6 - 12
Location: Room # 117
One of the major goals of inquiry-based learning is for students to experience those “aha!” moments in which, after grappling with a complex problem, are able to draw their own conclusions. To get there, students need to gain confidence in close reading, problem-solving, student-lead discussion and collaboration. In this interactive session, participants engage in an inquiry approach to document analysis. Special attention will be placed on how to get students to effectively collaborate and participate in document-based discussions.
Presenter
Joseph Lincecum
Grade Band: 6 - 12
Location: Room # 133
Why is it difficult for secondary students to connect with the history they are expected to learn? What can we do to help students locate the value in understanding their place in the broader historical narrative? Since we serve students who are often from marginalized or disadvantaged communities, we must work towards inserting their voices. Achieving this objective necessitated the development of an innovative method in which to impart historical knowledge. Students, with the guidance of their teacher, will discuss issues that impact their current time, providing a foundation for them to connect with generations of Americans who have experienced a wide spectrum of traumas and successes. Through a series of structured lessons, including interviews and primary source research, a historical literacy will be established, empowering students to more effectively connect their story with those of others.
Geo Inquiry
Presenter
Jamie Patterson
Grade Band: 6 - 12
Location: Room # 218

This instructional strategy helps students develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge, and tools of a geographer and exemplifies the goals of New Mexico's new inquiry standards. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of the inquiry process, what it looks like in the classroom, and tangible resources to get started.

All Trans: TGNB Inclusion for the New Mexico classroom will be a presentation aimed at introducing gender-affirming concepts to folks creating, developing, and supporting learning environments for LGBTQ+ students in New Mexico. Gender-affirming terminology will be introduced as the first of three basic concepts for folks to explore. Second, we’ll provide some data and stories from students throughout New Mexico to connect the affirming language to our stories.
Next, we’ll introduce learners to prominent LGBTQ+ activists, groups, and communities from New Mexico and our Indigenous communities. Folks will see the connection of language to our community of learners and be better prepared to foster resilience and community to provide a safer and more affirming learning experience.
