About us

Mission Statement

"Our purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity."

What We Do

Latin Convention

Each year, the Woodgrove Latin Club sends a delegation of students to the Virginia Junior Classical League Latin Convention in Richmond, VA. At convention, students are able to compete in academic tests, costume contests, graphic and creative arts contests, and play open certamen. In addition, there are many opportunities for students to attend lecture seminars, participate in elections, and meet other classics students from across the commonwealth.

Latin CLub Activities

The Latin club hosts many fun activities each year for members to enjoy, including:

  • Movie Nights
  • Toga Bowling Outings
  • Corn Maze Outings
  • Certamen
  • Carwash Fundraisers
  • Spirit Nights

During club meetings:

  • Play Games: Rota, Certamen, Bluff, Musca
  • Saturnalia Potlucks
  • Gingerbread Classical Architecture
  • Celebration of Rome's Birthday
  • Ides of March Celebration

Certamen

Certamen is a game of fast recall of facts about classical civilizations and its peoples, languages, and cultures. The matches are supposed to be fun, competitive, and informative. There are two types of Certamen contests for NJCL students at Convention, Open Certamen and Competitive Certamen.

  • Open Certamen provides an opportunity for students to engage in FRIENDLY competition. The designated purpose of Open Certamen is to allow those delegates without much previous practice the chance to experience Certamen on a fun level, without the pressure of Competitive Certamen.
  • Competitive Certamen is for those students who wish to play certamen at a competitive level. The three divisions of Competitive Certamen are Novice, Intermediate, Advanced (depending on the tournament).
