FAQs
What is Educators Rising all about?
It's a club affiliated with the Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) Honor Society. Educators Rising is a free national membership organization for aspiring teachers and their mentors. If you are leading or participating in a school-based program that helps young people explore teaching — consider joining Educators Rising to connect with peers and experts around the country who are focusing on the same issues and challenges.
Who at Woodgrove High School can join Educators Rising?
Anyone who has an interest in pursuing a career in education.
Does it cost anything?
Dues for Educators Rising is $20. Field trips have associated costs (transportation, entry fees, etc.) but are optional. Pursuing the Educators Rising Honor Society has associated costs but is also optional. Join and then decide how being an Educators Rising will best support your high school goals. There are several leadership opportunities in Educators Rising for students to take advantage of, which will enhance your college application and resume. Some students find that coming to our monthly meetings and lending a hand to support current initiatives is enough---there are degrees of involvement--you chose how much or how little you want to do!
What do we do in club meetings?
We plan initiatives that we carry out that support teaching and learning. Read Across America in March is a "big deal" for us, but so are school supply drives, teacher appreciation initiatives and eating (we typically have snacks at meetings :)
Do we have conferences?
Yes, there are usually 2 conferences members of Educators Rising attend. The fall conference is a professional conference where students attend breakout sessions relevant to their interests in education (early childhood education, special education, coaching, teacher preparation programs to list a few), enjoy lunch and hear a keynote speaker. This conference is typically held in December at The National Conference Center in Landsdowne, VA. Professional dress is required (females--collared shirt and dress pants/skirt, dress suitable for the work environment, professional shoes; males--collared shirt and tie (jacket optional), dress pants, and professional shoes). The second conference is typically in March and is an event where students interested in participating in competitive events attend. This conference is being held in Glenn Allen, Virginia this year. Professional dress is required. You can find out more at https://www.educatorsrising.org/what-we-offer/competitions
