Participants use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop a finite solution to a challenge that is presented on site. Working under time constraints, they must analyze the problem, brainstorm possible approaches, and apply principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to create an effective and practical solution. Teams are evaluated not only on the creativity and functionality of their final product, but also on their collaboration, design process, and ability to clearly communicate their solution to judges.
