Read alouds are a great source of rich vocabulary. Read alouds contain a variety of vocabulary words, from high frequency words used everyday, to content specific words. Instead of just giving your child the definition, pause and have a conversation about the word. You can even practice looking up the word. Below are some discussion questions that you can use for new vocabulary words:
What is the definition? Does the word have multiple meanings?
Does the word have any synonyms? Antonyms?
Can you use the word in a sentence?
Does the word have a suffix or prefix in it?
You can even make your own word wall at home to show all the great words your child has learned while reading!
