Throughout the school year, students complete a variety of activities to better their understanding of genocide in the 20th century. These activities include videos on genocide, reading Night, potential guest speakers, a field trip to the Holocaust Museum, web quests, and more. This culminates in their Genocide Awareness Project.
After an introduction to genocide in the 20th century, students will be assigned a topic and group for the project based on their input. Students will start in depth research into their genocide which includes primary sources, secondary sources, and organizations that either work to prevent genocide or work with survivors. Students are then tasked with creating a piece, either informative or commemorative, to help raise awareness for their topic. Projects in the past have ranged from tri-fold boards, sculptures, paintings, videos, journals, and pamphlets, to virtual worlds. The only limitation is that students are asked not to submit a flat poster or slideshow. Examples can be seen below:
