Choose Your Film Structure
Narrative: Even a very short film needs a beginning, middle and end. The opening shot is very important and should help to set the tone of the film. In the first few seconds, you will need to introduce a character and present them with some kind of challenge or issue. The story pushes forward and in the final seconds of your film, the initial challenge or issue is fully addressed.
Documentary: A documentary could be used to explore the chosen theme. If you are creating a documentary, think of an interesting way to explore the topic such as conducting interviews. When you are shooting a documentary, it’s very important to capture a B-roll, which is footage that helps to illustrate a story. During your interview you can cut away to the B-roll footage or help maintain audience interest.
Animation: Although animation can be challenging and time consuming, it can allow you to take your audience to places that traditional filmmaking can’t.
