- Find a mostly blank wall to perform in front of. You can also instruct musicians to film in front of or with certain theme or objects.
- Make sure the musician is evenly lit from the front with no light sources behind them. Place a lamp directly behind the camera to help.
- Frame the musician in the center from the chest up with the camera set up horizontally (phone). If there is choreography a Vertical orientation of the camera may be preferable, landscape offers more wiggle room if the musician doesn't center themselves perfectly.
- Make sure the camera is as close to eye level as possible. See DIY tripod below.

When using a phone and another device you are capturing your performance with your phone's back camera and microphone while listening to the practice track on another device.

If using a computer the audio from the microphone on earbuds is normally better than most laptops/ChromeBooks. You must use headphones to listen to the practice track while capturing your performance.

Apple is aware of an issue the prevents video playback from some .MP4 files. To fix this use the video converter linked in the "Fix Video Issues" section.
Recorder Options for the 1 Device Method

Video Recorder is a free online webcam recorder that requires no sign up. The only caveat is you must use Google Chrome web browser.
Google Meet can be used in most web browsers. Create a meeting and join it. Then at the bottom right hand side of the window click the 3 vertical dots and then select record at the top of that menu. Hangup/leave the meeting to stop the recording. The file will be automatically saved to your google drive.
QuickTime PLayer is a program already on all Apple devices and downloadable for Windows devices. Click on link to see how to record. (not for ChromeBooks)
Zoom can also be used to capture your video either through their downloadable app.

Wireless Headphones can be used to record.
You cannot use them to create practice tracks due to BlueTooth lag.
- You must use headphones when recording the performance to listen to the Practice Track
- Earbuds with a built in microphones are normally good for recording at home.
- If they do not have any they will have to have the recording playing on a separate device quietly in the background.
- Some Gaming headsets with a microphone build in do not have great audio quality.
Earbuds with a microphone will sound better than the built in microphone on the chromebooks. (be sure the mic on the earbuds is not touching your clothing or hair)

The musician will click on the link of the google for your created. Fill out all the fields and then click on the upload icon. Then select the file from your device and then upload.

It is very important to upload your video from the device in which the musician recorded it from. Emailing the video will in most cases compress and decrease the quality of the video.

You can upload to a cloud drive and then send a link to that uploaded file without loss of file size. The easiest way to send it is through a form uploaders o that the editor automatically has all the file in one location.
