- Emailing the publisher or filling out their request form for licensing is the first step.
- Say in plain language what you want to do with their music. Ex. "I want to create practice click tracks and post a virtual ensemble of _________. I will post it on YouTube and Facebook on ________ date"
- Most publishers are discounting licensing for educators for the banket license for practice/click tracks and for the Synchronization license. I have paid $25 for such a licence. Baba Yetu cost $250 because 2k games owned it. I got permission from Christopher Tin and the publisher. Possessed the printed music.
- If you are live streaming a performance or pre recorded performance you may not need a synchronization license. The law isn't clear on this point. You could make the arugment that a live stream is covered by analogy to the first broadcast of a televised concert. Posting a recording of that live stream requires the synchronization licence.
- Posting a performance online or social media requires a synchronization licence.
- It is in publisher's best interest to give you the permission to perform the piece because, it is better than free advertising, you are paying them.
- Getting a composer's blessing goes a long way with the publisher.
- The money you pay for the license supports the composer and poets.
