Mr. Christopher Fairchild is the current band director at Harmony Middle School since the 2017-18 school year. He is a graduate of Unity Reed High School in Manassas, Virginia and received his Bachelors of Music Education and Masters of Conducting degrees from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.
Mr. Fairchild is in his 30th year of teaching, and in his ninth year at Harmony Middle School. Under his direction, the Harmony Symphonic Band has performed at VBODA Level III-IV and received only Excellent and Superior ratings at concert assessments and music festivals, including Superior ratings performing at Level IV in 2018 and 2019 (twice that year). The extra-curricular Harmony Jazz Ensemble has also received only Superior and Excellent ratings at the LCPS Jazz Assessment.
From 2008-2017, Mr. Fairchild served as the band director at James Wood Middle School in Frederick County, Virginia. Under his direction, the James Wood Middle School bands received only excellent and superior ratings at assessment, festival, and competition performances. The Symphonic Band consistently performed at VBODA Grade IV at Concert Assessment, and received five Superior ratings. At the Music in the Parks Festival in Hershey, PA, the Symphonic Band performed only at Grades IV and V, received eight Superior ratings, won first place in their division all nine years, and was named the Best Overall Middle School Band in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Mr. Fairchild was named the James Wood Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2016.
Prior to teaching at James Wood Middle School, Mr. Fairchild worked with the Winchester Elementary School band, was the assistant band director at Daniel Morgan Middle School in Winchester, Virginia, and taught music theory and applied clarinet at Shenandoah University.
Mr. Fairchild has been in great demand as a clinician and as an adjudicator throughout the years. He has worked as a guest director with the Fauquier County and Frederick County Band Camps, was the guest conductor for the Shenandoah County All-County Band in 2016, 2018, and 2024, directed the District IX All-District Band in 2017, directed the Fauquier/Rappahannock/Culpepper Tri-County Middle School Band in 2019, the Frederick County Honor Band in 2023, directed the District XIV All-District Band in 2024, and directed the District XIII All-District Band in 2025. Mr. Fairchild served as an adjudicator for Solo and Ensemble Festival multiple times in Districts IX and XIV, and has adjudicated at Concert Band Assessment in Districts V, VI, IX and XV.
