Phonological Assessment of Literacy Skills
PALS measures knowledge of important literacy fundamentals and is used as a diagnostic tool to guide reading instruction. It is given to all K-2 students three times per year and only inthe fall to 3rd grade students new to Virginia public schools, did not meet the Spring benchmark in 2nd grade, or have received summer interventions. Teachers use the data from this assessment to determine next steps for literacy instruction.
Administered in the fall, winter, and spring.
PALS results are shared on ParentVUE after the testing window for the state has closed.
