"I grew up in Pennsylvania and participated in agriculture classes and FFA while I was in high school. I loved what I was able to do through the organization and saw much growth in my leadership skills. My passion for FFA and leadership carried on past graduation when I served as the Pennsylvania State FFA Treasurer. In the year of my service, I was able to visit schools, speak at banquets, run leadership workshops and conferences, attend business networking events, learn about PA agriculture, and so much more.

That year allowed me to learn more about agricultural education and is what motivated me to become an agriculture teacher myself. During this time, I also took on a job working at a swine production farm caring for finishing and farrowing animals. I worked a little with the beef cattle as well. After my year of service and farm work, I attended The Pennsylvania State University (We Are!) majoring in Agricultural and Extension Education and minoring in Spanish. I've had a lot of amazing experiences during my post-secondary education experience including a study abroad trip to Puebla, Mexico, Internships at the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and the Chester County 4-H, and my student teaching placement at Greenwood High School with my wonderful cooperating teachers. I am also proud to say that I have received my American FFA Degree.

After college, I began my teaching experience at Louisa County High School; moving all the way from Pennsylvania to Virginia! I am one of four agriculture teachers at the high school and serve as an FFA Advisor for the high school chapter. I am entering into my fourth year of teaching which includes courses in Applied Agricultural Concepts, Horticulture Science, Greenhouse Plant Production and Management, and Introduction to Animal Systems. I love working in the greenhouse and maintaining the garden (except when it's REALLY hot outside!!). Plants have been the area I thrive in, but I have loved working with livestock in the past and enjoy teaching the subject as well.

While I didn't grow up with an agriculture background, my goal is to bring agricultural advocacy, awareness, and appreciation to all students so that they too can discover the extraordinary value that agriculture brings to our lives. My freshman year as an agriculture student had a profound effect on me and has brought me to where I am today. I hope the journey my students take with agricultural education does amazing things for them as well."

Mrs. Moyer's Guiding Principles

The Three Circle Model of Agricultural Education

As a member of the nationwide community of agriculture teachers, we believe in the Three Circle Model of Agricultural Education. This is displayed as a triple venn diagram with equal amount of Classroom/Laboratory Instruction, FFA/Leadership, and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). This means that in each agriculture classroom across the country, agriculture teachers are not only teaching content knowledge, but exploring leadership through FFA and real-world recordkeeping experience through an SAE. Because FFA and SAE are considered intracurricular, these "circles" of the model are also taught in the classroom. Students are not expected to join FFA, but they will learn about it and may participate in various activities in and outside of the classroom.

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard"

In my few years of experience, I've seen a lot of different students from different backgrounds walk into my classroom. I do my best to show each and every student the love that they need and deserve. But I am a firm believer that the best thing a person can do for themselves is to give themselves the best possibility at a successful future. A guiding principle I keep for myself and expect of my students is to work hard to achieve the success you dream of. For high school students, it is imperative that they learn self-discipline, responsibility, professionalism, and have a go-getter attitude. Through various activities and mini life lessons, I hope to teach students this very important trait in each class I teach.

A Well Rounded Candidate

It excites me to think that I am teaching the world's next leaders. I know many students will go on to do amazing things. I am humbled that I get to be a part of their path to success! Through my teaching, I remind students frequently that my goal is not just on teaching content knowledge. I place a lot of value in teaching students how to be a top candidate for any organization, leadership team, internship, scholarship, college, job, or career that they wish to pursue. Woven into the content lessons are opportunities for students to enrich themselves professionally, agriculturally, and even personally with 21st century skills.
