Students in each grade level will be presented with lessons from these topics when they attend "Guidance Class" for resource. Check with your child's teacher to find out which days they have each resource class. Lessons will be differentiated for age groups/grade levels.
Topic 1: Introduction to the School Counselors- lessons provide an overview to who the school counselors are, what will be happening in guidance class, and how counselors help students at school)
Topic 2: Emotional Awareness, part 1: Students explore the many different emotions that people can experience
Topic 3: Emotional Awareness, part 2: Students develop a better understanding of and learn ways to cope with negative emotions.
Topic 4: Self Awareness: Students will recognize their personal traits and unique qualities and will have opportunities to share with others.
Topic 5: Likes and Dislikes: Students will recognize that everyone likes and dislikes different things and will learn to respect the likes and dislikes of others, even if they are not the same as their own.
Topic 6: Gratitude: Students will explore what it means to be grateful and will be given opportunities to express their gratitude to others.
Topic 7: Positive Attitude: Students will learn about the benefits of having a positive attitude and will explore ways to keep a positive focus in life, even when faced with adversity.
Topic 8: Kindness: Students will explore the many ways to show kindness in their families, school, community, and world.
Topic 9: Friendship: Students will explore what it means to be a true friend by practicing sharing, empathy, and good communication.
Topic 10: Being an "Upstander": Students will learn how to stand up for others who are bullied or treated unfairly.
Topic 11: Including Everyone: Students will learn the importance of helping everyone around them to feel valued and included.
Topic 12: Helping Others: Students will learn and practice being helpful in their home, school, and community.
Topic 13: Appreciating Differences (Diversity): Students will explore the many differences (both visual and non-visual) that exist among people in their families, school, community, and the world and why respecting differences is important.
Topic 14: Cultural Awareness: Students will explore their own cultural background, as well as many other cultural backgrounds that come from around the world and make up the many cultures that exist within our own country.
Topic 15: Understanding Race and Ethnicity: Students will learn about the physical characteristics that make up a person's identified race. Older children will further expand their knowledge of what ethnicity means, and will examine how they (and their own families) identify.
