In the Leaving Cert Geography exam you have to answer a question on Physical Geography.
The best way to understand the Physical Geography section of the course is by splitting it up into three broad topics. These are:
i) Plate Tectonics
ii) Rocks
iii) Rivers, Glaciers and the Coast.
Within each of these broad topics there are lots of different possible questions. Possible questions include:
1) Plate Tectonics
Internal structure of the earth.
Plate tectonics model.
Plate boundary landforms - volcanoes, earthquakes and fold mountains.
How the movement of plates have influenced the position of Ireland.
2) Rocks
The formation of igneous (both plutonic and volcanic), metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
Folding and faulting.
The processes of weathering (both physical and chemical).
Human interaction with the rock cycle.
3) Rivers, Glaciers and the Coast
Features of erosion and deposition created by rivers, ice and the sea.
Landforms created by Isostasy.
The impact of human activity on the surface of rivers, glaciers and the sea.
(For this section you only need to know Rivers or Glaciers or the Sea in great detail . We recommend that you focus on Rivers.)
Based upon our analysis of past papers we recommend that you study a set number of the above topics. Subscribe today to see our recommendations.
Despite what others will tell you, when revising Regional Geography you can leave out certain topics. You don't have to study everything. Here's our general advice.
You have to answer one regional question.
The four main sections you need to study are:
i) Ireland
ii) Europe
iii) Continental/Sub Continental region
iv) The EU
The best way to understand the first three sections above is by splitting them up into five topics. These are: i) Primary Economic Activity ii) Secondary Economic Activity iii) Tertiary Economic Activity iv) Population v) Urban Development. You will also have to be able to draw sketch maps.
Given that Regional Geography covers a large amount of information, we believe it is a necessity to precisely focus on certain topics. In other words you need to work smarter, not harder. You must reduce what you revise in Regional Geography in order to boost your grade.
